I am now on juice fast Day 1! I am aiming to do it for as long as I can, hopefully a week or more, we shall see. I have experience with different types of fasting but have never attempted anything this ambitious, and I think the key is to do it when you’re ready and when your life is ready to receive it. I felt ready and so, after research, I have gone for it!
seize the day!
Previously I’ve had too many health pressures around food, living with all the health conditions I have. Being a type 1 diabetic I have to be very cautious about fasting, it is certainly not suitable for everyone, but as I am on a flexible insulin regime (basal bolus) I am able to proceed, adjusting to my lowering insulin needs (do read my fasting page for more info on these issues and further resources on fasting). The reality of being a very sensitive type 1 diabetic has meant I have to take a proportionally very high amount of insulin (a growth hormone) for my food, despite my diet being relatively low carb, and that I cannot shift the weight I need to shift, which is very frustrating. It’s not a lot, but it’s enough to be wrong for me. I also need to exercise more, and I’m hoping that rebooting my system in this wonderful way will give me the energy, reduce the pain I am in, and prepare me for the next stage of becoming as fit as I can. I used to swim a lot, and do exercises and yoga stances in the pool, which is just great exercise for arthritics and other joint pain sufferers, but for a long time now I have had so many problems with ear infections that I haven’t felt able to. But the more inactive you are, the more health problems pile up and so I am determined to do EVERYTHING I can to fight the malaise and be as fit and healthy as I can possibly be.
bring on the juice fast I’m going for it!!
A juice fast is an intensive detox period, allowing your body to focus on this natural function and so step it up. You’re pumping yourself full of nutrients, you’re not going cold turkey, so it’s not delirium-hell, I’m not welcoming that into my life. Fasting is a unique experience. Already, only at Day 1, I feel I have more mental space, more objectivity, I am thinking spiritually, less clogged up. It is just extraordinary to realise the ways in which food affects us. A break from food is a break for your body, and your body’s state affects your mind’s state, your mind’s state affects your emotional state. Your mental and emotional states affect your physical state. It’s all interrelated, and in this day and age we tend in general to overload our bodies, which is not a good thing at all, to say the least.
I used to overeat, not majorly, but definitely, and now I don’t. If I do I feel it badly so I avoid it, and I try not to consume toxins apart from environmental ones, which are probably heavy enough let’s face it, and so I don’t expect to have a major crisis from juicing (here’s hoping). For a while now I have had an alkalising diet, an anti-inflammatory diet, aimed at helping my body to heal and thrive as much as it can, effectively processing and expelling toxins. This is the next step in that process.
I am ready.
I am positive.
I am strong.
I am going to focus on green juices, as they are the most nutrient dense and alkalising, but this light fruity juice is so delicious, and so good for you too. It would seem acidic, but it’s not! The lime, grapefruit and celery are alkalising/ alkaline-forming, and apples are low acid, cleansing and packed with goodness. It gives you such a lift it’s just lovely.
Juicing has brought so much to my life already in such a short space of time. I am enjoying so much experimenting with new flavour combinations, such as this celery, apple and citrus juice, and knowing too that I am giving my body so much goodness. After a juice I immediately feel so much better, my head clears, I can feel the nutrients, it’s quite an amazing thing. I am officially saving for a cold-pressing masticating juicer!
I love this juice, the natural sweetness of the orange with the celery and the bitter sweetness of the grapefruit, the lime cutting through it all (like lemon I could never get bored of lime, what a wonderful fruit it is, and like lemon it is alkalising within the body, an extraordinary thing as it is an acidic fruit.
Magic no science IT’S SCIENCE! They contain organic salt such as citrates that forms bicarbonate, which is highly akaline. Which is magic.). I love preparing the juices, the colours and scents of the fruit and vegetables are so uplifting. I love too that it is something that Dan has thrown himself into. His is often a difficult relationship to food, as with so many people, men particularly I have found, he has a strong preference for oven-baked food, fatty carbs and proteins. It’s a textural thing. He also has a particular squeamishness about ingredients, he really doesn’t like the idea of combining foods, especially unusual combinations. And yet with a juice it all goes in, mixing fruit and vegetables with glee. This is so good on so many levels for us. He has a juice now before any meal, and so knows he is getting all the nutrients he needs whatever he is eating. He does gulp it down faster than me, I savour it, loving the flavour combinations, often unusual!
I will post updates on the blog, and keep up with my juice fast daily on instagram; any advice, support or shared experience would be so welcome, so please feel free to leave me a comment! You can also contact me on facebook, twitter or via email. I’m going to need all the help I can get to really go for it and make this work!
- 1/2 pink grapefruit
- 1 orange, ruby or other
- 1 lime. most of
- 1 celery stick
- 3 cups of filtered water
- squeeze of agave syrup
- 2 inch chunk of ginger
- 1/2 beetroot
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
Easy! Juice the fruit and veg and drink either neat or diluted to taste. Makes optimal juice, especially if using a masticating juicer.
Still easy, and easier to clean up! Chop the fruit and veg, bar the lime, and adding the half of the water blend for a few minutes or so. Strain with a sieve, pushing the juice through with a large spoon, or with a cheesecloth, squeezing out the juice. Put the pulp back into the blender with the rest of the water and blend and sieve/ strain again. Add the lime, chop in half and squeeze. I use at least half a lime.
Drink straight away, or store in the fridge (I use a jam jar with its lid on) and drink within half an hour or so for the most nutrients. But if you like it's still really good for you later in the day, and a great boost when needed.
As a type 1 diabetic on a basal bolus insulin regime I am proceeding with caution, adjusting my basal insulin as my needs are lowering, and monitoring my blood sugar levels, matching the carb content of the juices to my bolus insulin as usual. If you are type 1 diabetic, please see my fasting page for more info on who should and should not proceed with such a fast and consult your diabetes team.
Fasting is a great health tool but it is not for everyone, it is about taking the pressure off your body, not putting more on and should be researched and entered into with caution. If it is suitable for your health needs then it is something to really embrace and enjoy the benefits of, do see my fasting page for more info and further resources.
