My life has been transformed by green juices! They make you feel so alive! I have a green juice and I can immediately feel its effects, I can see better, think more clearly, it’s quite extraordinary!! Dan and I are now total converts and have three a day! 2016 got off to a very shaky start health-wise, I’ve been exhausted, I have an ear infection in both ears, a virus (or about four layered upon each other forming some kind of super-bug union) and all my health conditions have been hell. And then along come green juices and I feel so much better, instantly! I can think! (at least for a few minutes after-wards, so I’ll have to get them lined up ready).
WHAT HAVE I BEEN DOING ALL MY LIFE?
LIFE BEGINS HERE!
I have been determinedly trying to have a low carb alkaline diet for anti-inflammatory health reasons for a good while now, and yet only recently have I discovered the green juice! I mean I knew people drank them, that they were wonderful things, but, call me slow, somehow the penny hadn’t quite dropped that this was everything that I needed. I knew why juices were good, that their nutrients were absorbed more quickly because of the lack of fibre, but especially as someone with a lot of digestive issues, always felt that smoothies were better for me because the fibre is in. Also I live on a budget and the amount of organic veg I’d need was daunting, I didn’t (don’t) have a juicer and never quite fancied a thick kale smoothie. I didn’t realise that you could make a juice without a juicer by blending the ingredients up with some water and pressing the mixture through a sieve (and then reusing the pulp once again to make even more wonderful juice!). I went for it and it worked! And it didn’t take much, you don’t need buckets of fruit and veg as I had anticipated, this way anyway. I’m sure a masticating juicer especially produces a far superior juice, but until I save up for one this way is SO much better than nothing. It’s great! The fast hit of nutrients to the body is like nothing else, and it’s a delicious drink. Sold.
Now I am packing in those wonderful antioxidants and nutrients! It is a powerful hit of hydrating alkaline food medicine and life-force, an elixir. I do feel a bit like this I have to say…
As with anything I am completely headstrong and like to feel my way, experimenting and learning the hard way, and I soon realised that with juices this is fine. You can follow a recipe and enjoy that, and you can tweak it, or you can just use what you have. And apart from the spent pulp, which I am now reconciled to, it is so anti-waste, I LOVE IT! Any bits and bobs. The whole veg. In goes the whole apple, core, pips, all those incredible nutrients that are so often wasted. I remember when my parents used to eat the whole apple and I was like ‘wHat?!’
I used to dread kale in a way (am I allowed to say that or is it going to mean some kind of plant-based black listing?!) as it’s so tough and needed so much cooking, and as the pan bubbled on and on I felt its life-force ebbing away and like a terrible cook and person (although of course it’s still wonderful stuff cooked and the water makes a great stock for soups and cooking buckwheat or quinoa). Having it raw is just a great thing!
I can now eat fruits in a green juice balanced out by the green alkaline veg and so without worrying about their acidity. Lemons and limes are alkaline-forming within the body and so always my friend, but others, though I have always faithfully believed in their health-giving fabulousness, were also upping the acidity when my aim, and need, was to eat as alkaline as possible.
Apples are a wonderful fruit, the natural best friend of green vegetables such as kale, greens, celery, broccoli and spinach. And with ginger and lime, which cut through and lift the flavour, ramping up the anti-inflammatory content, and the wonderful turmeric with its great pal black pepper, make the most heavenly juice. Turmeric and black pepper together are potently powerful, fighting cancers, especially such as prostate apparently, and generally backing each other up to become an anti-inflammatory health-giving super-team. Such alkaline super-food is great for pain-relief, stress-relief, relieving symptoms of chronic health conditions and helping ward of future ill-health as well as being powerfully anti-aging (though I’m not quite talking Death Becomes Her, unlike the film you have more than ten years!). Also the effect of packing in vegetable nutrients is that you won’t be so hungry, cravings will stop or at least reduce and your body will find balance. I used to have terrible cravings that really dominated my life. Since following an anti-inflammatory diet they have for me stopped completely, and since drinking fresh green juices I am noticeably less hungry and have been eating less, which is great for me as a type 1 diabetic who needs to lose a bit of weight (check out my sustainable weight loss guide). I need less bulk of food as I am getting so much wonderful bio-available goodness.
Now everyday I start the day by giving myself the best chance at health, and so happiness and balance. Let’s all do the same and get as much from life as we can! GO FOR IT!!
Powerful alkaline anti-inflammatory green juice that tastes so good and will make you feel AMAZINGLY ALIVE instantly!
- 150g kale
- 50g spinach
- 2 medium sized apples
- 2 sticks celery
- 25g ginger root
- Lemon, optional
- Lime, most of
- 11/2 tsp ground turmeric, or even better fresh
- 1 tbsp agave syrup, or natural sweetener of choice, to taste
- Large pinch of black pepper
- 4-5 cups filtered water if using blender
If you have a juicer, juice and go! Add the lime juice to taste after juicing, and have neat or water down to taste.
If you don't have a juicer, use a blender; add the ingredients with the juice of half a lime, a squeeze of lemon and half the water 21/2 cups), blend for five minutes or less if you cannot stand the noise!) and sieve and press the liquid out. Then put the pulp back into the blender with the rest of the water and repeat. Add more lemon and lime juice to taste, I use half a lime for the first press and a squeeze more for the second.
Also some aloe vera juice or an aloe leaf will give the juice extra wonderfully soothing qualities, and a dash of not-from-concentrate or fresh apple juice (or indeed an extra apple!) will make it sweeter and more fruity. More ginger will pep up the heat.
I really enjoy a fairly watery green juice (which you get if making the juice with a blender and sieve, from the second press) with a squeeze of lime, throughout the day, it's so refreshing, hydrating and delicious. I keep it in the fridge in a jam jar with the lid on, ready to go, and drink it all within a few hours.
I've prescribed a delicious recipe here, but while a useful guide it's certainly not set in stone; experiment and add in your own fruit and veg varieties. Leave me a comment,, I'd love to know what you come up with or any juicing tips and info!
