What do we always have to nurture and inspire, to inform, to calm and excite, wherever we are, even out of a window, amongst any ugliness in the city, the countryside, in the suburbs or by the sea? (the photos of the sea are of Weston-Super-Mare, taken when we visited some of Dan’s family for a recent wedding). THE SKY!! I grew up in the Cambridgeshire Fens, which is flat, drained land dominated by the sky, like this. It’s so beautiful to be able to see all of the sky, ever changing, ever giving, it is everyone’s and no-ones. It’s FREEEE!
If you can’t see well, or if you can, the sky is there! Look up and feel its expanse, the sun’s rays giving us life, the moon’s influence in the sky, the planets taking their places in their orbits. The changing light at the beginning and end of everyday, the soft enclosure of cloud cover, the feeling when the sun bursts from behind a cloud and touches your skin, the drama of a storm brewing.
Since living in the Dark Peak, where the weather is so changeable, I have seen some wonderful clouds, formations I have never experienced before and that just take my breath away. It must be the same all over, as different geographies create the skyscape. They’re the most exhilarating and awesome thing to me. Sometimes, clouds seem to open up another world, as though you can see a heavenly place. And we all see faces, animals, different shapes and forms in the sky and get a thrill.
I could literally fill pages and pages full of clouds and different skies (you know I could!), but I chose just a few, and will come onto sunsets and dawn another time! And the night sky!! The stars and the moon… did you hear about how dung beetles take a photo of the night sky with their eyes, the position of the stars and light of the Milky Way, and use it to compare to another image to determine their location in the savanna or
dessert desert! (YUCK! Dung dessert, though it’s sure to be a delicacy somewhere in the galaxy). Dung beetles are so incredible, check out this and this clip, I can’t believe they push it backwards and upside down, and those damn bustards!
(Why don’t you check out some of my desserts here, now I have roused your appetite so beautifully… oh God… let’s cleanse our palate with the fresh beauty of the sky.
The sky is always there for you, with its drama and beauty, space and peace, with its sense of infinity and our wonderful planet, wherever you are. So often we spend our time looking down, always internal, on our devices, let’s look up and feel free. When the sun is shining find a patch of grass, lie back and look up and lose yourself for a while. Why not make a wish upon the first star you see. I always used to do that as a child, why do I never do it anymore? We mustn’t lose such wonders, such a positive imagination, it can bring such magic to life.
Have a lovely week and look after yourself.
