WHAT IS IT?
Wellness is an active process of becoming aware and making choices towards a healthy and fulfilling life. The World Health Organization defines it as:
“…a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
I would say it that instead of complete, optimal would be a better word, as complete health for example is not available to all, if not most people, but it is the process of striving for optimal health in every aspect of our lives. When I first started hearing the word wellness I thought, shame on me for being such a grouch, that it was a cringey kind of word. But now I just adore it. It is the BEST kind of word, it’s everything we should strive for as individuals and collectively.
what more could we ask for in the definition of a word, or indeed, from ourselves and our life?
As so many good things, and paths to truthful, good things, are, it’s holistic. It’s about seeking balance and fulfillment in this life, a life-long mission that everyone needs to grasp hold of. Wellness is a positive pursuit, and something we should collectively enable in each other. Everyone has the right to pursue wellness, to be as happy and as healthy as they can be. And such a holistic pursuit is extremely important for those of us living with health conditions, and striving to cope daily with their demands on us emotionally, physically, spiritually, socially and psychologically. Getting the most out of life, keeping hold of and developing your identity, interests and connection with yourself and the world around you, learning to look after yourself as best you can and to be kind to yourself.
